The Damned
City

Beneath the streets of Los Angeles lies a world that would shatter the language of most men. No lakes of cartoon fire. No endless screaming chasms. Hell is older and more disciplined than mortal fear allows.

Towers climb in geometric severity from the dark, their surfaces inlaid with metal that gleams like wet blood or tarnished gold. Bridges hang between spires at impossible heights. Processional roads cut through the city in mathematically perfect lines, each one marked by glowing seals that regulate who might cross and why.

"Hell did not need spectacle. It had infrastructure."

Chapter One

Steel, Silence, and Survival

The apartment kept no true clock. There were mechanisms that pretended to be one. A black watch face on the narrow table by the door. The pale green crawl of the microwave above the stove. The city's distant electric pulse filtering through reinforced glass. But none of them meant anything here. Not really. Not in the rooms Luce had made for herself.

Time in her apartment was measured in other things. In cooling wax. In the thinning scent of iron. In the amount of tension living behind her ribs. In whether the wards were quiet.

She stood barefoot on dark wood worn satin-smooth beneath her feet and laid the first knife on the table.

The blade was short, triangular, and ugly in a way only useful things ever were. No ornament. No vanity. Just a grip wrapped in black cord and a steel edge honed so fine it barely existed until light struck it. Luce turned it once between her fingers, then drew her thumb across the flat, not the edge. Feeling weight. Feeling balance. Memory lived there. Every weapon had one.

About The Author

Rebekah Lynn Rivers

Rebekah Lynn Rivers writes dark urban fantasy that lives in the shadows between worlds. Her work explores the tension between duty and desire, the weight of ancient power, and the quiet violence of survival in places where the rules are written in blood.

Her debut series, The Damned City, unfolds beneath the streets of Los Angeles, where Hell operates not as chaos but as infrastructure — a governed realm of towers, processional roads, and bureaucratic precision. At its center stands Luce, the Devil's daughter, who has spent three thousand years hunting demons and navigating the politics of the infernal.

When not writing, Rebekah can be found exploring the darker corners of storytelling, building worlds where every shadow has a name and every silence carries weight.
